University education instill a great deal of expectation in students' minds. Finding a good job is one of the common expectations after having to spend considerable amount of time, energy and money. Unfortunately, many people simply fail to get desired jobs in desired industries. In addition to that, many people stay unemployed or enroll themselves for another educational programme. The examples are abundant in our country. The dots between career and employment after graduation are always hard to connect. To address this issue, Dhaka University Career Club (DUCC) organised a seminar on 'Connecting the Dots: Career and Employment' on August 22, 2016 at TSC auditorium.
Among the seminar sessions, one was for Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) and Bangladesh Bank (BB) job seekers and the other one was for corporate job seekers. The sessions were followed by an interactive question and answer session with live streaming facilities from DUCC facebook page. The speakers were very specific about their recommendations and tried to build optimism in audience throughout the session. Munir Hasan, coordinator of Youth Programme of Daily Prothom Alo, inspired the young minds with his insights and learnings from his practical experiences. He mentioned students should properly carry on their own responsibilities for our country and society. He believes that this carries the best essence of patriotism. Munir also expressed the importance to enjoy student life. He said, "Don't miss anything to enjoy life for anything. Suppose, you have an exam tomorrow. That doesn't mean you have to miss the race of Usain Bolt."
Abid Hasan Sazal, founding president of DUCC, encouraged audience to spend time for their own passion. He, along with Pradeep Biswas, went to present the vision and goals for helping young minds to develop their careers. Hanif Zakaria. General Manager of Ethihad Airways, advocated to follow one's preferred area of work to succeed in future. According to Hanif, "To earn you need to l-earn (=learn) at first." He then posed a question to young minds whether they give full effort to prepare themselves for better livelihood. The speakers also advised audience to think global to align themselves with the global opportunities and dynamics. Towheed Feroze, Head of Communication, International Finance Corporation of World Bank Group, opined, "Your workplace is not only Bangladesh. The entire world offers you employment opportunity."
The final session was conducted by Mr. Warishul Islam, first place holder in 35th BCS Foreign Affairs Cadre. Warishul had three advices. Firstly, he asked to stay humble with whatever one is currently doing in life. Secondly, he advised to be hungry for what you want to achieve in life. "It's a competition between you and you. You have to fight for becoming you-er (better) than you," he opined. Finally, Warishul urged young people to simply smash down any barrier they face in their life by saying, "Just do it with your passion. Be structured and stay focused. Success will follow you."
In the end, Rakib Hossain, President of DUCC thanked everyone for making the event happen and promised to organise such interactive seminars in near future.
