On the Bangla new year, sexual harassment incident occurred at University of Dhaka, the law enforcers failed to stop the attackers and bring them under law enforcement.
Social platforms like Facebook and twitter flooded with reactions quickly since the assaults spread quickly. Newsfeeds of these media suggest that they are all united in demand of security of girls by ensuring exemplary punishments to the culprits. It is quite natural and expected that incidents like these embarrass the non-teasers extremely. It is not a bizarre to see stringent reactions from both men and women. After the incidents, let us see the outcome. People especially women start believing that society cannot ensure security.
Now, if we flip the coin by turning to men, we see completely different reactions from them. What they are trying to say is that women must wear decent clothes. Not all men are good and it cannot be expected top moral ethics from culprits. But, almost all men have agreed that clothing cannot trigger real men with proper moral ethics. They also suggest that those culprits must be brought under law enforcement and no compassion should be given.
If you have been through social media updates in the last few days, you will see numerous captions or photos being shared specially by women and various organisations. Many women think that they have been dominated and harassed by men for years. If men do not change their wrong attitude, nothing will be changed.
As it seems, both males and females cannot agree for the solution of these incidents. They both blame each other to some extent. So, who is right? Who should you listen to? Are girls right that men must change their attitude? Is it the only cause? Or should we listen to men who think those girls lack decent clothing? Are men and women both right? Or are they both wrong?
As a student of Dhaka University, I have been asked numerous times by my friends, relatives and neighbours whether or not Dhaka University students are behind the scene and if so why no culprits cannot be identified. I had discussed the topic with different people for the solution. Both these men and women are right. Women are right in a sense that not every man of us is gentle and ethical in nature. As a human being, men are highly attracted to women. Albeit that, it is responsibility for both men and women to act decent and work unitedly to sort this problem, as suggested by Mr. Reza Mamun, Jail Super at Chandpur, a former student of Geology Department of Dhaka University.
"Still real men can never tease even in the slightest manner," added Mr. Mamun. He expects that situations will ameliorate if social organisations and government perform well enough and if they can give message to all that being social and loyal to laws is the only way of peace.
Both men and women must act decent having respect for each other. Message should be given that above all both men are women are human beings. Culprits must be brought to book by bringing under exemplary punishment. If incidents like these occur more frequently in public area and culprits cannot be caught, we are afraid that men and women will lose respect for each other. But, we must not lose hope. Human beings made impossible possible on numerous occasions. They climbed the Everest and conquered the moon. They have come with flying colours and overcome all those challenges every time. Will you still think that such incidents are big enough to be not cured? Will you still say that these problems will exist and situations will never ameliorate? If human beings think it is time to change, what can stop us?
