2022 has been a rough year for the global economy. Even the billionaires who made their fortune in technology have faced a significant hit as their collective loss amounts to about USD 500 billion. The names include heavyweights, ranging from Mark Zuckerberg to Sergey Brin.
Jeff Bezos
Despite being consistently ranked among the wealthiest people on the planet, 2022 has been a challenging year for Amazon's Executive Chairman. As per Bloomberg, his net worth declined by USD 58 billion this year.
Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg's Meta platform incurred heavy losses this year, with stocks crashing as much as 25 per cent a few days ago. Zuckerberg's net worth has dropped to USD 32.8 billion as a result, which is about $104 billion less than that of the past year.
Elon Musk
Elon Musk has been in the limelight ever since he got hold of Twitter, and similar to other prominent tech entrepreneurs, he lost a significant amount of his wealth this year as well. Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter, saw his wealth plummet below the USD 200 billion mark as Tesla shares hit a record low last week.
Sergey Brin and Larry Page
Sergey Brin and Larry Page, co-founders of Alphabet Inc., the parent organisation of Google, faced significant consequences as their net worth went down by USD 40.6 billion, in addition to the USD 40 billion loss in paper wealth.
Bill Gates
Once the wealthiest man in the world, Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, also lost about USD 28 billion this year, meaning his net worth is the same as before the pandemic, i.e., USD 106 billion.
MacKenzie Scott
Mackenzie Scott is the only woman on this list and one of the top 20 richest tech entrepreneurs. Along with her husband, Jeff Bezos, Mackenzie also lost more than USD 29 billion from what used to be her net worth from last year.
Steve Ballmer
The former Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, saw his net worth dip as, according to Forbes, the shares of Microsoft fell 14 per cent, roughly equivalent to USD 13.5 billion.
Azim Premji
This Indian business heavyweight also had to bear the brunt of the ongoing downturns, as he lost about USD 12 billion since the beginning of 2022.
Pony Ma
Pony Ma, the founder of Tencent, the parent company of PUBG, saw his net worth go down by USD 2.5 billion, leaving him with USD 24 billion. His humongous losses had more to do with the drop in share prices at Hong Kong-listed Tencent.
