Bangladesh is going to have its first-ever domestic cloud data centre which, once set up, is expected to save a large amount of forex the country spends annually for purchasing and using the cloud technology.
An agreement has been signed to set up the cloud data centre named 'Meghna Cloud' between Bangladesh Data Center Company Limited (BDCCL) and Gennext Technology Limited under the jurisdiction of Information and Communication Technology Department.
Bangladesh Data Center Company Managing Director Abu Sayeed Chowdhury and Gennext Technology Chairman Touhidul Islam inked the deal in the city on Thursday.
This joint venture 'Meghna Cloud' will be 'Made in Bangladesh Cloud'.
Through this, it will be possible to provide services to any organisation, including government and private ones, by keeping the country's data in the country.
Once completed, a large amount of foreign exchange the government spends annually in purchasing and using cloud technology will be saved.
Besides, a Research and Development (R&D) centre will be set up for 'Meghna Cloud' with faculty and students from the data centre industry as well as government and private universities.
In December last year, Bangladesh Data Center Company Limited set up a four-tier ICT facility in terms of cyber security, at Bangabandhu High Tech City (BHTC) in Gazipur, outskirts of the capital, with help of Oracle Solution.
The initiative enabled government agencies and ministries to access secure cloud services and accelerate the country towards Digital Bangladesh vision, according to the BDCCL. The BDCCL expects to save foreign exchange worth around USD 4.0 billion annually. The state-owned data storage and disaster recovery services provider was selected for the Tier-IV Data Centre.
Regarding the service development, Oracle Bangladesh made an agreement with ICT Division last year.
The data centre has 'zero downtime', meaning no service interruption, and 99.995 per cent uptime.
The cyber and infrastructure security of the centre was ensured further developing a three-tier backup storage facility called 'disaster-recovery data centre'.
