Government websites hacked

Hackers have attacked several government websites, including those of the prime minister's office, the home ministry and the president's office, purportedly in support of the reforms in the government job quota system.

Around 10pm Tuesday, the homepage of those sites became replaced with a page demanding quota reform, along with a photo of the ongoing protests.

When contacted on Wednesday morning, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ICT) Minister Mustafa Jabbar said, "The intelligence department is working to find out the hackers involved.

“They (hackers) might have used the name of the agitating anti-quota platform."

According to him, all the websites should be up and running well by then as the recovery works were initiated immediately after the incident happened last night.

The minister added, "Websites across the world were being hacked in recent time. In line with those incidents the government websites might have been hacked.”

The websites of the home, education and agriculture ministries and the Public Service Commission were found hacked around 12am on Wednesday, reports UNB.

Students and job seekers around the country have been demonstrating against the existing quota system in government jobs.

In the last few days the protests escalated to violent confrontations with police in the Dhaka University area.
