Chromebooks: The cheaper alternative for light laptop users

Chromebooks: The cheaper alternative for light laptop users

During the covid-19 pandemic, the world has seen the largest surge of demand for computers and laptops.

The situation has affected Bangladesh quite similarly too; the demand for computers and laptops is now more than ever, and it is no longer the case where a single computer or laptop would suffice the need for virtual tasks of a household.

But this can present a difficult situation. In a country like Bangladesh buying a new laptop is a significant investment for many households and may introduce a case where the customer is either refraining to buy a new device or being forced to curtail the budget of other essential accessories just to afford a new one.

This is where Chromebooks could come as an affordable alternative. For a lot of households, their demand for laptops has increased because of the online classes of their children, a sharp increase in online meetings and the need to do remote work from the web.

None of these mentioned activities requires any powerful device. A device with good mobility and battery life would be suitable for any of those tasks.

Chromebooks are the sort of devices that get the basics done. These devices use ChromeOS, a Linux-based light-sized Os, as their operating system instead of windows. Let’s see some of the pros and cons of these devices.

Pros

Chromebooks are very thin and light devices which makes them great for portability, and they generally have good battery life, with an average of 8 hours and up to 12 hours.

Chromebooks come with 100GB of free google drive storage, have in-built android software support, and great support for online collaboration in Google suites.

These devices are also good for media consumption and can run Microsoft suites that are available on google play services for android.

These devices can also be used to play android games and are good for any sort of activities that can be done online.

The biggest selling point for these devices is their price. Whereas a basic laptop in Bangladesh would cost at least BDT 50 thousand, Chromebooks have a starting price point of just around BDT 22 thousand, making them substantially cheaper than windows devices.

Cons

Chromebooks can not be used for resource-heavy works or traditional gaming. They generally do not come with powerful hardware and lack the software support that can be enjoyed with Windows devices.

Also, Chromebooks rely heavily on Google’s cloud storage support and they do not come with great in-built storage support.

If you are looking to buy a device for your child’s online classes, or just a device that would get your online tasks done, would be great for meetings and have a good battery life – all within an affordable price, Chromebooks would be the perfect alternative for you.
