The Rx 6500xt is AMD’s latest release in their GPU line-up, but since the GPU’s release on 19th January of 2022, it was washed with negative reviews all over the internet, and there are good reasons why.
The Rx 6500xt was initially designed as a laptop GPU that would perform better than the integrated Radeon graphics in AMD-powered laptops.
So as far as cheap laptop GPU goes, this GPU was designed to work in low wattage mainly for light gaming, with no video encoder and only with 2 display outputs.
Then AMD changed their decision which seems to be on an ad-hoc basis to produce the GPU as a discrete GPU to tackle the ongoing crisis in the budget gaming segment. But its not-so-competitive specs inevitably translated into poor performance, and this has massively failed fan’s expectations all over the world.

RX 6500xt, in PCIe gen 4 connection, performs worse than its direct predecessor the Rx 5500xt in the 12-game average result, the former is also behind the 5-year-old GPU the Rx 590.
And we have to keep in mind that the target audience for this GPU is almost invariably using a cheaper motherboard with no PCIe Gen 4 connections, rather they are most likely using one PCIe gen 3.
The 6500xt’s performance in PCIe gen 3 is even dire, falling behind the 5-year-old mid-ranger Rx 570, making it one of the worst GPUs in the market.
Now let’s see another interesting result. As the older Rx 5500xt supports PCIe gen 4, how does it perform in that arena?
The benchmark results are quite surprising, as reviewers have found a significant performance boost in the 4GB model after switching the GPU from a PCIe gen 3 motherboard to a PCIe Gen 4 motherboard.
The following benchmark shows a massive 78 per cent increase in performance of the GPU on a PCIe Gen 4 lane.
In a benchmark comparison done by the popular YouTube reviewer Hardware Unboxed, they have found an increase in performances in almost all the games they have tested.
The Rx5500xt also comes with the standard 4 display output and a video encoder, so the GPU can also be used to work on light 4k video editing works, which is not possible in the 6500xt as it doesn’t even come with a video encoder built-in, which is a massive disappointment.

This only shows how bad a deal the current Rx 6500xt is right now. This GPU is currently selling at Tk 24,300 in Bangladeshi markets and it clearly performs worse than most of the budget GPUs in the market.
The Rx 5500xt even being the predecessor, performs significantly better than its newer version. So buying a new Rx 6500xt is clearly a downgrade after all, not an upgrade.
