Professor Robert Metcalfe is ​an Associate Professor of Economics (with tenure) at the University of Southern California. The main theme of his research is applied microeconomics, with a focus on using field experimental methods to understand human behavior in consumer markets and within organizations.

He is currently recruiting a Full-time Pre-doctoral Fellow.

Job Description:

  • The position will entail close collaboration with all stages of the research process on projects in applied microeconomics, including estimating the welfare impacts of optimal regulation and environmental and climate change policies, and implementing and analyzing field experiments. 
  • The position and project will be jointly managed by Professors Robert Metcalfe (USC) and Nathan Hendren (MIT), and the Fellow will be part of the Policy Impacts community. 
  • The work will include in-depth exposure to a broad set of literature in economics and experience with advanced empirical and statistical methods.

Eligibility: 

  • Successful candidates have come from a variety of backgrounds (including from undergraduate and graduate programs, industry jobs, and other research assistant positions), and have a range of skill levels and experience with coding. 
  • Applications are especially encouraged from backgrounds underrepresented in economics. 
  • The ideal candidate will: 
    • 1) have completed an undergraduate degree in Economics, Mathematics, or Computer Science; 
    • 2) have a strong interest in applied microeconomics; 
    • 3) have a strong quantitative background, with strong programming skills with experience in statistical software such as R or Stata, and Github; 
    • 4) be able to work independently and in teams to solve problems, with strong communication skills; and 
    • 5) be planning to pursue a PhD in Economics or a related field.
