AT present we see a scarcity of 100-Taka notes in the market. Even in commercial banks enough notes are not available. Banks cannot offer new notes but give their customers old and torn-out notes. The banks complain that they are not given enough notes from the central bank to satisfy the demand of the customers. It is reported that 100-Taka notes are being sold at a higher price and a section of people is taking advantage of the situation to make windfall gains. I hope that the government will come forward to instruct the Bangladesh Bank to investigate into the matter and find out the reason(s) behind the shortage of 100-Taka notes and take action to mitigate it urgently.
