THE natural beauty of a country is a gift of Nature. Hence it is a moral responsibility of people to conserve all natural resources. The city of Dhaka was once a place of countless tanks and ponds. But instead of conserving the ponds and water bodies we have been replacing them with residential and commercial structures. New buildings are being built and the traditional green Dhaka has been losing its charm. Open spaces in the city, including ponds, are being increasingly covered with concrete structures. As a result, places for leisure and refreshment are also fast disappearing. These ponds, which were once living places for fish and other aquatic animals, have been filled, and ecological balance has been lost.
Stories of ecological imbalance are frequently published in newspapers. But no steps are taken either by the authorities concerned or private bodies to stop water bodies from being further grabbed for construction of buildings. The authorities should take necessary steps immediately to preserve natural beauty of Dhaka.
