A few days ago, I asked one of my colleagues, what is our national game? He replied promptly, 'Football'. For once I was taken aback and stood speechless. Why is the standard of football fast declining in our country if it is our national game? It is indeed surprising as for the ages we have seen football being played throughout the nook and corner of the country. Football matches were organised in remote villages. Another popular game 'kabadi' (Hadudu) has almost disappeared from our soil. Once upon a time, Kabadi was a very delightful game for the rural youth. People used to gather in large numbers to enjoy the game. It was the most liked sport and kabadi tournaments were organised throughout the year to entertain the sporting crowd. Kabadi was one of the main recreations in our daily life till a few decades ago. But now it is fast becoming a matter of the past. It is hardly played any where in the country. In the country annual sports are organised in almost all schools where many events cricket, football, tennis etc are played, but unfortunately Kabadi is overlooked and is not included as an event.
In this way, our national game football is also losing much of its traditional glory and public support. Unlike Kabadi, football still has a good following and the Ministry of Sports should take appropriate steps to bring back its lost glory.
