NOW-A-DAYS most people of the city travel by rickshaws due to lack of public transport. As the city population is rising transportation within the city is becoming increasingly dependent on rickshaws as a result of which traffic congestion is worsening day by day. The problem can be greatly solved if the government provides more buses to BRTC, the state-run public transport agency. BRTC is a semi-autonomous corporation under the Ministry of Communication. It provides both passenger and cargo transport services. It operates three international bus services. Inside Bangladesh, it operates inter-district bus services from its bus depots in Chittagong, Bogra, Comilla, Pabna, Rangpur, Barisal, and Sylhet.
In Dhaka the number of buses is grossly inadequate and the number of passengers on most occasions is ten times more than the number of seats. If the government expands BRTC services and provides additional buses, it will be a lot easier for the people to commute. It will help office goers reach their office in time and university or college students who come from far off places to attend their classes.
