Deadly road mishaps due to reckless driving

AT LEAST 17 people were killed and eight others injured in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur after a truck carrying Eid holidaymakers skidded off road. Identities of the victims could not be known immediately. The victims were returning home from Dhaka and Gazipur to celebrate Eid with their family members. These deaths could have been avoided had the drivers been more cautious in driving.
An increasing number of road accidents has become a matter of great concern. Reckless driving has been attributed as the major cause. The government is also aware of it and has been cautioning the drivers every now and then to be careful in this respect. But very little has been achieved so far and the drivers of highway transports continue to be reckless. Many lives are lost in this way.
I hope the government will further tighten its grip and award tougher punishment for the offending drivers and compensate the families of dead and injured people adequately.  Desperate homebound passengers are taking every risk so that they can reach home as fast as possible. We see the passengers traveling on roof top of trains and buses which is very dangerous.
The highways have become a death trap for the travellers. We must not forget that our life is costlier than our time and we should avoid risky trips. It is better to reach home late than never.
