DSEX crosses 6,200-mark as bank shares shine

Stocks extended the winning spell on Thursday, with key index of the major bourse crossing the 6,200-mark again, as investors continued their buying spree on banking issues.

Brokers said the market ended higher as investors showed buying appetite on large-cap sectors like banks, taking the key index above 6,200-mark after 10 sessions.

The market started with a positive note and the upward trend sustained till end of the session with no sign of reversal, finally key index of the major bourse closed more than 42 points higher.

DSEX, the core index of the DSE, which replaced the DGEN in four-and-a-half-year back, settled at 6,202 points, after gaining 42.35 points or 0.68 per cent over the previous session.

The two other indices also ended higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips advanced 10.97 points or 0.50 per cent to finish at 2,201. The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) rose 5.77 points or 0.43 per cent to close at 1,350.

The trading activities also crossed Tk 10 billion-mark with total turnover on DSE amounting to Tk 10.58 billion, which was nearly 20 per cent higher than the previous day’s Tk 8.84 billion.

However, losers took a marginal lead over the gainers as out of 332 issues traded, 149 closed lower, 144 higher and 39 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Uttara Bank topped the day’s turnover chart with 12.22 million shares of Tk 480 million changing hands, closely followed by Exim Bank, UCB, LankaBangla Finance and Islami Bank.

Trust Bank was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 8.18 per cent while Modern Dyeing was the day’s worst loser, plunging by 5.43 per cent.

The port city bourse Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed higher with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX - gaining 80.68 points to close at 11,669.

Losers beat gainers as 120 issues closed lower, 113 closed higher and 23 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 19.61 million shares and mutual fund units worth Tk 615 million in turnover.
