Stocks keep gaining, turnover soars 49pc

Stocks posted a marginal gain for the third straight session on Monday as optimistic investors continued their buying binge on June-closing shares.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 5,227, gaining 10.72 points or 0.20 per cent over the previous session.

Market analysts said a section of investors were active on sector specific June-closing stocks while some rebalanced their portfolio based on quarterly earnings declaration.

Two other indices also edged higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 5.46 points to finish at 1,847 and the DSES (Shariah) index rose 4.95 points to settle at 1,202.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.85 billion, which was 49 per cent higher than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 3.24 billion.

A total number of 136,496 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 128.59 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market-cap of the DSE also rose to Tk 3,885 billion on Monday, from Tk 3,875 billion in the previous session.

The gainers and losers were same as out of 352 issues traded, 152 closed higher, 152 ended lower and 48 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Khulna Power Company topped the turnover chart for the second straight session with shares worth Tk 214 million changing hands.

The other turnover leaders were Orion Infusion, JMI Syringes, Monno Ceramic and Coppertech Industries.

Al-Haj Textile was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.89 per cent while Phoenix Finance First Mutual Fund was the day’s worst loser, slumping by 9.09 per cent.

The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, also closed higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – advancing 41 points to settle at 15,998 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX –gaining 22 points to finish at 9,718.

The gainers beat the losers as 121 issues ended higher, 109 closed lower and 39 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse traded 6.65 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than 227 million in turnover.
