Stocks edge up after rough ride

Stocks rebounded in positive terrain on Thursday, spanning the previous day’s panic-driven sell-off, as some investors showed their buying appetite on financial stocks.

Market analysts said despite the market closed slightly higher, trading activities dipped below Tk 4.0 billion-mark, reflecting investors’ low confidence to the market.

The market opened on positive note and in the mid-session saw downturn. But late hours’ buying spree helped the index to close marginally up.

At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 7.71 points or 0.14 per cent to settle at 5,459.

The two other indices—the DS30 index and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) – saw fractional gain.

The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 0.59 point to finish at 1,948 and the DSE Shariah Index gained 0.13 points to close at 1,269.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, however, dipped below Tk 4.0 billion-mark again and amounted to Tk 3.63 billion, which was Tk 20 per cent higher than the previous day’s Tk 4.51 billion.

A total number of 92,712 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 71.44 million securities.

The market capitalisation of the DSE also fell to Tk 4,072 billion on Thursday, from Tk 4,183 billion in the previous day.

The gainers took a modest lead over the losers as out of 345 issues traded, 157 advanced, 137 declined and 51 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

United Power topped the DSE turnover chart for the sixth straight day with shares worth Tk 336 million changing hands.

The other turnover leaders were Fortune Shoes, Grameenphone, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company and Monno Ceramic.

Eastern Cables was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 5.69 per cent while United Insurance was the worst loser, losing 9.15 per cent.

The port city bourse CSE also ended slightly higher with its CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI –advancing 5.10 points to settle at 16,740 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX –gaining 1.33 points to finish at 10,135.

Here too, the gainers beat losers, as 117 issues closed higher, 91 ended lower and 36 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 3.52 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than Tk 112 million in turnover.
