A group of aggrieved retail investors are staging a token hunger strike in front of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) building on Monday in protest against inaction of the authorities concerned on the market slump.
Under the banner of Bangladesh Pujibazar Biniogkari Oikya Parishad, they started the protest at around 11:00am on Monday.
The investors have been calling on the authorities to act on the deteriorating state of the market for the past one month, staging protests in front of the DSE building.
Thanks to the slump in the past three months, the country's main bourse witnessed more than Tk 330 billion wiped out with its benchmark index eroding 700 points, or 12 per cent.
The investors demanded immediate resignation of M Khairul Hossain, chairman of capital market regulator Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, for his failure to bring the market back to normalcy.
They also condemned Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal for his latest harsh remarks on the capital market.
The DSE opened on downward trend on Monday.
The main index of the prime bourse plunged 64 points, or 1.22 per cent, to 5,174 points when the report was filed at 12:20pm.
