Football in 2021 - most significant events

2021 has been an excellent year for Football lovers. With an exciting transfer window and some twists and turns of events on the international stage, this certainly is one of the most memorable years in the history of Football.

Chelsea's Champions League Triumph:

Chelsea had a quite astonishing turnaround this year when the management hired Thomas Tuchel who himself was sacked from PSG to replace club legend, Frank Lampard.

Ever since, Chelsea have witnessed nothing but success with the peak moment is winning the 2020/21 edition of the Champions League

Italy's Euro Triumph:

Italy, being a traditional and dominant footballing nation, missed out on the 2018 World Cup. But the appointment of Roberto Mancini worked wonders for them as they went on to win the Euro Championship by playing a non-traditional attacking brand of Football.

Argentina with Copa America:

Argentina finally got to win an international tournament after 1992 with Lionel Messi finally getting rid of the curse which held him for a long time from winning any international tournament.

With a fantastic and dominant display at the Copa America, by sweeping all the awards of the tournament, Messi conquered it all.

Crazy Transfer window:

The transfer window of summer 2021 might be regarded as the most eventful in the history of Football with a significantly large number of high profile transfers.

Lionel Messi finally left his boyhood club Barcelona after it was finally revealed that the club were unable to keep him despite both parties being willing to continue. Cristiano Ronaldo moved from Juventus to Manchester United, a club where he received global acclaim after ditching city rivals Manchester City at the last moment, this transfer window never stopped showing amusement and surprise.

Sergio Ramos leaving Real Madrid and joining PSG where he is playing with his former arch-nemesis Lionel Messi is something that has thrilled and surprised football fans around the world.

Somewhat Controversial Ballon d’Or:

Lionel Messi won his 7th Ballon d’Or this year. Although a very articulated case can be made in his favour, many legends of the game including many former Barcelona players like Luis Suarez Miramontes, Rivaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic considered Robert Lewandowski to be the more deserving candidate.

The award, given to Messi yet again, has created somewhat of outrage in the footballing world with many ex-players like Iker Casillas publicly coming out to criticise the voting procedure.

2021 as a whole, has been a remarkable year for football fanatics. It is highly anticipated by fans around the world that 2022 will live up to the hype of 2021.
