Cilic’s resilience sends injured Nadal packing

Marin Cilic is through to his first Australian Open semi-final after 2009 champion after No.1 seed Rafael Nadal was forced to retire early in the fifth set.

Nadal was trailing 3-6 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2 2-0 at that moment.

The 2014 US Open champion claimed his first win over the Spaniard since 2009 to book a final-four showdown with Kyle Edmund.

According to Australian Open’s official website, the unseeded Briton beat Grigor Dimitrov, the No.4 seed, earlier on Tuesday.

Nadal, who lost to Roger Federer in last year’s Australian Open final, was hampered by a hip injury in the fourth sets, but Cilic was very much in the contest over the first three.

But after giving up a break at the start of the decider the 16-time Grand Slam champion walked up to the umpire’s chair and ended the contest after three hours, 47 minutes.
