The first Test match at the Bay Oval has taken a major turn of events in the last 30 minutes of the day and is tilted towards Bangladesh, thanks to career-best bowling figures from Ebadot Hossain of 4/39 so far.
New Zealand end Day 4 with a score of 147/5 with a lead of 17 runs after Bangladesh took a 1st innings lead of 130 runs.
Earlier, Yasir Ali and Mehidy Hasan Miraz carried on from their 31 runs partnership from Day 3.
The New Zealand bowlers maintained a testing line and length looking for an early breakthrough. They were almost successful in doing so as Miraz survived on two DRS referrals that went his way.
After that, both of them were comfortable enough to negotiate the blackcaps bowling by putting balls away for boundaries at regular intervals with Miraz being the aggressive one out of the two.
As their partnership reached 75 runs, Miraz got out (47 from 88 balls) attempting a cut shot away from his body only to find the outside edge to the keeper from the bowling of Tim Southee.
Yasir Ali’s wicket followed soon, who got caught leg side to the keeper off a Kyle Jamieson delivery after scoring 26 runs off 85 balls.
Tigers ended their 1st innings within a short while for 458 runs with a respectable lead of 130 runs.
New Zealand were asked to bat for 10 minutes before lunch as openers Tom Latham and Will Young played out the 3 overs bowled in that period for 10 runs without the loss of a wicket.
After lunch, the bowling duo of Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed maintained a good bowling channel.
Taskin got his reward on the 6th over in the post-lunch session as he dismissed New Zealand captain Tom Latham for 14, who inside-edged a ball onto the stumps that bounced off the good length.
Devon Conway, the centurion of the New Zealand first innings, came in at No 3.
Ebadot Hossain was brought in as the 4th bowler for Bangladesh halfway through the session and he bowled at a decent pace with a probing line and length.
Miraz at the other end complimented Ebadot well with the turn he was getting. When the Young and Conway duo reached a partnership of 34 runs, Ebadot managed to get Conway out for 13 with a beautiful inswinging delivery that was caught by Shadman Islam at gully.
With 4.4 overs remaining for Tea, Ross Taylor and Will Young successfully negotiated a testing period of bowling trailing by 62 runs. Young was dropped on 31 by Liton Das.
In the last session of the day, Taylor and Young upped the run-scoring a bit. Taylor, in the process, was seen trying to play Miraz but missing. He was eventually dropped by Shadman in the deep as he played a sweep shot straight to the fielder’s hand, batting on 17.
Meanwhile Young got to his fifty. As their partnership reached 61 runs, Bangladesh failed to run Taylor out thus missing out on yet another chance to dismiss him.
As it seemed Bangladesh would rue on their missed chances, Ebadot picked up two wickets in one over sending back both the set Young for 69 runs and Henry Nicholls for a second-ball duck.
On that second over of his spell, his pace and movement were too much to handle for Tom Blundell who was trapped before the wicket for 0.
Bangladesh end the day as experienced Ross Taylor, who had some luck this innings, holds one end up along with Rachin Ravindra making it all to play for on Day 5.
