UGC holds workshop on use of digital library

A day-long workshop titled 'University Grants Commission (UGC) Digital Library User Training' was held at UGC auditorium in the city on Sunday.

UGC in association with Wiley, an online-based publisher, organised the professional training programme for the librarians of public and private universities and some national level organisations.

UGC chairman Prof Abdul Mannna, who was present as the chief guest of the programme, said that Digital Library enhances knowledge, skills and efficiency of teachers, students and researchers at higher educational institutions.

He said the demand for e-resources is growing in the country and digital library can play a significant role for creating new knowledge to produce skilled manpower.

Mannan also said the country needs skilled manpower and innovation for the sake of its progress.

UGC member Prof Dr. Md Akhtar Hossain, in his speech, emphasised on the need for proper use of e-content and said "UGC Digital Library is playing its due role in excellency of country's tertiary level education and research."

At present, 90 organisations including 86 universities of the country were subscribing over 35,000 high-quality scholarly e-resources through UGC digital library. A total of 14 e-publishers including Wiley were providing e-resources to the subscribers.

UGC secretary Dr. Md Khaled, Secretary delivered the welcome speech.

Md. Abdullah Al Hasan Chowdhury, Additional Secretary (University) of Ministry of Education and Dr. Gauranga Chandra Mahanta ndc, Project Director (Additional Secretary) of Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project, were present as the special guests on the occasion.

Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Professor Dr. Dil Afroza Begum, members of UGC and divisional heads of UGC, among others, were present at the programme, reports UNB.
