Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called on Bangladeshi nationals studying in Australia to make use of every opportunity presented to them.

The prime minister made the remarks on Saturday morning, the second day of her trip to Australia.

“The Bangladeshis who are studying here shouldn’t just aim to get a degree … they must aim to get an education,” she said during a tour of the southern campus of the Western Sydney University Parramatta.

“We have much to learn from Australia.”

The prime minister presented flowers at the bust of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the campus during her visit.

The statue was unveiled in front of the campus’s Institute of Ocean Governance by Law Minister Anisul Huq on Feb 20, 2017, reports bdnews24.

Sheikh Hasina said that the university’s recognition of her father and the Father of the Nation had moved her deeply.

She said that the location of the statue was also appropriate considering the 1974 legislation passed by parliament regarding Bangladesh’s maritime boundaries.

“The Father of the Nation brought the law before parliament in 1974, years before the UN’s 1982 convention on territorial waters.”

Hasina touted recent agreements on maritime territories with India and Myanmar.

“We have resolved our disputes with our two neighbours while maintaining friendly relations,” she said.

The prime minister also mentioned the bitterness that was generated in seeking resolutions between neighbouring countries.
