Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has always been known for encouraging club activities. There are many significant events held in IUB throughout the year under different clubs. Independent Economic Society (IES), which is an economic club of IUB, is one of those clubs. This has gained name for its outstanding performance in recent years.

About the club

The club has been known to promote the knowledge of economics not just among the club members, but also among the students of other departments. All the clubs of IUB have so far tried to work for the development of the students through activities like debates, student competitions, workshops, seminars, etc. and Independent Economic society (IES) has been no different. In the past few years, they arranged well-organised events like Brain Teaser 1, Brain Teaser 2 and Brain Teaser 3. They have also managed to pull off an exciting event like Creative Blog Part 1 and 2, which encouraged many students to be apart of this club. After managing to pull off such amazing events, the club is all set to host their next big event, 'Econ Brainiac'.

About the event and its format

This coming month Independent Economic Society (IES) is organising 'Econ Brainiac', an intra department competition for the first time among different departments under the School of Business. There are eight different departments under the School of Business including the Department of Economics. Each department is allowed to send two of their best teams, where each team would consist of three members. With sixteen teams, the event would take place, where the teams would compete against each other.

The competition Econ Brainiac would comprise two rounds where the first round would focus on the analytical skills of the participants, and the final round would revolve around the issue of the participants solving the socio-economic problem through PowerPoint presentation. Only four teams would make it to the final round, and only one would be the champion with the best solution to the given case. The champions would be provided with prize money of Tk 12,000, the first runner-up would receive Tk 9,000 and the second runner-up Tk 6,000.

The first round of the competition would take place on October 29, and the final round would take place on November 01 at the Multipurpose Hall at IUB. The event is being organised with a theme of medieval times where each department would be associated with a civilisation to symbolise the situation during those times.

Expectation from the competition

The competition is going to challenge the participants with different socio-economic issues that are occurring in recent years. This would not only help them relate to the existing problems in our societies in both national and international scales but also challenge them to find feasible solutions to tackle those problems.

Independent Economic Society (IES) believes in progression. The club does not just want to do their activities within the campus but to include school students and students from other universities. The management believes that this would allow people to understand and solve economics problem in a much more competitive and exciting manner.

The partners for Econ Brainiac are Utshobh Group (associate sponsor), Mitali Textiles and Bashundhara Food and Beverages Limited (co-sponsors) and Grow (event partner).
