IU forms ‘Mental Healthcare Cell’ to prevent suicidal tendency

The Islamic University (IU) authorities have formed a seven-member 'Mental Healthcare Cell' with a view to counsel students against suicidal tendency.

IU Vice-chancellor Professor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari on Tuesday formed the cell headed by professor Reba Mondal of Department of Law, said IU acting registrar SM Abdul Latif.

Other members of the committee are Assistant Proctor Shammy Akter, Assistant Professor M Amzad Hossain and Lecturer Shahida Akter Asha of Law and Legal Studies department, IU Journalists Association Vice-president KM Mahfuz Mishu, students Mominur Rahman and Mithila Farzana.

Five students of different departments of the university committed suicide in last year, reports UNB.

The university authorities found that the students committed suicide being suffered from various problems including frustration, depression, love affair and family feud.

On October 19, Nazmul Hossain, a third year student of department of law, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room at Saddam Hossain Hall over family feud.

The Head of the cell Reba Mondal said that they will try to solve if any of the students shared their problems with the cell.
