Knowing proper English opens many doors universally. Although a comparatively new club, the Holy Cross College English Language Club (HCCELC) has had the privilege of affecting many.
As part of regular activities, the club hosts workshops focusing on writing, public speaking, and more. Interactive sessions are held regularly, for members to master various skills. It is now a platform for writers, readers, debaters-- anyone with an eagerness to learn. In a short period, HCCELC has come far indeed.
To quote the words of the founding president of the club, Fabiha Maimuna, currently doing BBA at IBA-DU, "Back in school, I enhanced my English language skills by participating in competitions and practising. However, when I started my college life, I felt the lack of a platform to nurture these. With this thought, the encouragement of our respected moderator, and college authorities, we started the journey of HCCELC in 2018. Since then, students have found their way to learn and grow through this club. I am overwhelmed with joy that our club came this far."
Our differences are what make us unique and HCCELC believes that everyone has an equal right to prove themselves. This is why they have designed a festival celebrating these variances, combining unique and traditional segments together. Full of intriguing and unique events, the fourth Inter College English Language Festival is set to be an absolute success attended by over 2,000 students from 90 institutions.
A work of art may speak a thousand words. Embracing this concept, the 'Wordtoon' segment has asked participants to interpret a theme and draw graphic art based on that. Calling all improvisers and rising actors, the 'Act it Out' segment allows individuals to showcase the inference of their favourite characters. 'Then the story ends' is a fun segment where the ending has been provided and competitors are required to finish the story. With a twist on the traditional olympiad, the 'Master of Vocabs' segment is for students to show off their literary jargon. The 'Labyrinth of Literature' is also a hugely popular event brought back from last year. With higher stakes this time, teams will make difficult decisions and outsmart others to victory. Apart from these, the festival will also host several conventional events like the Spelling Master, Wall magazines, Scrapbooks, Turn the coat, and so on. The plethora of events will give the opportunity for the students to display their reading, writing, comprehension, and many more skills associated with English language.
Expressing his hopes for this fest, HCCELC's club moderator, Shuvendhu Chakravarty said, "The fourth Inter College English Language Festival is bringing huge enthusiasm and festivity. After the prolonged shutdown of the educational institutions due to the Covid pandemic, we hope this year's festival will help students get back their lost zeal for extracurricular activities and their passion to master English language."
Holy Cross College has been working on making English accessible to many for years. This almost four-year-old club has been going to great lengths since its exception to make its mark among the youths. The inter-college language festival is the epitome of such valiant efforts. It is delightful to see such a celebration of English language at present so that the skills of the youths can be manifested. The event will be held today and tomorrow (March 31 and April 01) at Holy Cross College, Dhaka.
