East West University (EWU) gave 'Merit Scholarship Award 2022' to 471 students from Spring 2020 to Spring 2022 Semester for excellence in academic performance, says a press release.

The scholarship was given at a programme on the university campus in the city on Wednesday.

Among the scholarship recipients, around 60 per cent are female students.

Addressing the programme as the chief guest, Syed Manzur Elahi, chairperson of the Board of Trustees of EWU and former adviser to a caretaker government, said women must develop themselves in workplaces as they account for 50 per cent of the total manpower of the country.

They have to be entrepreneurs, if necessary; otherwise, the country will not be able to make progress up to the desired level, he observed.

He urged the students to establish themselves as worthy citizens and at the same time advised them also to stay close to their parents even after becoming successful in life.

Syed Manzur Elahi also said parents sacrifice all of their resources for career development of their children; therefore, children should remain close to their parents as long as they are alive.

Prof Dr MM Shahidul Hassan, vice-chancellor of EWU, as special guest attended the programme with Prof Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chief adviser of EWU, in the chair.

Prof Dr Muhammad Ziaul Haq Mamun, pro vice-chancellor of EWU, delivered welcome address. They handed over certificates to the award recipients.
