Did you know orange peels can be turned into candy?

Did you know orange peels can be turned into candy?

We mostly throw the peels of citrus fruits away after we have used the flesh inside due to the bitter taste. But peels of citrus fruits like oranges can be turned into candies at home and they are both healthy and tasty.

Doing this would not only get someone introduced with a new recipe, but would make use of valuable parts of fruits which would have been thrown away otherwise.

There has also been a commercialisation of this unique dish, which has led to the availability of peeled orange candies in the candy shops. But the commercial stuff is generally not that good for health.

However, candied orange peels can be prepared quite easily at home following a few simple procedures. If you are curious to try something unique, here’s your suggestions.

Ingredients Required

The number of oranges totally depends on the amount of candied orange peels that you want to make.

For 1 cup of candied orange peels, you would need a large orange with it’s top and bottom sliced off along with 4 cups of sugar and one and a half cup of water.

Preparation

First, the orange peel should be cut into 4 segments vertically followed by a removal of each segment into a single piece which includes the white pith.

After that, the strips should be cut and the whole thing should be cooked for a little less than fifteen minutes with consistent draining and rinsing.

The sugar mixed with water should be boiled in medium heat in a saucepan, and the peels should be added when the sugar dissolves into the water. You have to continue stirring until the mixture along with the peels become tender.

The peels and an additional half cup of sugar then should be put on a baking sheet and kept on until the whole thing is dried. After that, candied peels are ready for use. You can keep them in the freezer as long as you want.

These candied peels can be used to make a wide variety of desserts including cake, cookies and other delicacies dipped in chocolate. They are high in nutrients in general and contain dietary fibre, vitamin a, vitamin c, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.

Orange is one of the most eaten fruits of Bangladesh but somehow we are oblivious to the fact that the peels of oranges can be used efficiently to make candies which are high in nutritional value and tasty as well.
