Knowing your skin type and how your skin responds to different products and seasons are essential steps in skincare. Even if they are helpful for excessive oiliness, abrasive cleansers and treatments can send messages to your skin that it needs more oil.
On the other hand, too-heavy moisturisers can reduce skin's natural oil production and make it even drier.
Choose the best solutions for your skin by taking the time to learn about the particular requirements of your skin. You might even notice that your skin looks younger and more radiant.
There are five basic skin types - normal, dry, oily, sensitive, and combination (oily and dry).
Normal skin
Normal skin refers to the term that the skin is well-balanced. The T-zone (the forehead, nose, and chin) can be a bit oily, but the overall moisture level is balanced.
Normal skin is the type in which skin doesn't overreact to the products. The sebum production in normal skin is just enough to maintain the oil of the skin. This type of skin can use products that are for healthy skin. People having this skin type faces fewer skin issues.
Dry skin
This type of skin produces less sebum than normal skin. For this reason, the skin lacks moisture. It will appear dull and lifeless because it is often covered with dead cells.
If you feel that your skin is dry, you need to keep it hydrated. Use a cream moisturiser in the morning and night and sunscreen in the daytime. Use gentle cleansers or cleansers, especially for dry skin.
Oily skin
Oily skin has more oil secretion than necessary. It also happens to people having large pores. If the pore is bigger, then the oil glands remain more active.
If the skin is oily, you will notice that after applying moisturiser or sunscreens, you are having breakouts.
Dr Asma Tasnim Khan, Skin, Sex & Anti-aging specialist, laser & cosmetic surgeon at EW Villa Medica, Bangladesh recommended in her vlog, “Avoid heavy moisturisers for oily skin. You can hydrate your skin with hyaluronic acid as it helps to balance the water level without leaving a greasiness. Also, use sunscreen during the daytime.''
Sensitive skin
This skin type is prone to inflammation, acne, rashes, and burning. This type of skin is over-reactive to the products.
Sensitive skin needs proper care like baby skin. People should less exfoliate and avoid harsh ingredients. Mild cleansers and mild moisturisers are suitable for this skin. It is good to do a patch test on the neck before using any new product. Above all, consulting a doctor/dermatologist is imperative.
Combination skin
Combination skin may have more oiliness on the T-zone and dryness on the rest of the part of the face. People with combination skin types can use products for dry skin if they feel dryness on most of the face. Also, they can use different products for the T-zone and rest of the face according to the oily and dryness.
