Call for modernisation of Waqf-related laws, regulations

A two-day long international workshop on `Revival of Waqf for Socio Economic Development’ ended at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel Dhaka, said a statement.

The experts in the workshop recommended to conduct study and research on Waqf in the country, measure the Waqf resources around the country, formation of Waqf Foundation in personal and institutional level, modernisation of Waqf related laws and regulations, utilisation of the prospect of Waqf in poverty alleviation, conducting effective drive for raising awareness about Cash Waqf and immovable property among the affluent segment of the society. 

Islamic Research and Training Institute of Islamic Development Bank, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited and Centre for Zakat Management jointly organised the programme.

Researchers, scholars and experts from Bangladesh, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, KSA, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States attended the workshop.

Lt. Gen.(Rtd.) Nooruddin Khan, former minister was present in the concluding ceremony as chief guest on Sunday.

The programme was presided over by Arastoo Khan, Chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited while Dr. Khalifa Mohammed Ali, Senior Economist of Islamic Research and Training Institute addressed the welcome speech.

Mohammed Mohsin, Chairman,  Salahuddin Kasem Khan, Executive Chairman of South East Economic Cooperation Foundation and AKM Nurul Fazal Bulbul, Vice Chairman, Islamic Banks Consultative Forum addressed the event as special guests.

Dr. Mohammad Ayub Miah, Chief Executive Officer of Center for Zakat Management presented an overview.
