The World Standards Day is being observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe on Saturday, aiming to raise awareness among regulators, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardisation to the global economy.

This year’s theme of World Standards Day is ‘Standards make cities smarter.’

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion.

They have laid emphases on following precise standards in manufacturing products and providing services to achieve consumer satisfaction and attain desired success in business.

President Hamid in his message welcomed the initiative of BSTI to observe the day, adding, "This year's theme of the day is time-befitting in the perspective of Bangladesh."

"The fast growing information technology has made the whole world to stand before a strong challenge. People's expectations are growing day by day with the development of technology. To meet these ever-increasing expectations, we need to follow international standards in every step from manufacturing to distribution," he added.

The President called upon the BSTI to intensify its market inspection and monitoring activities to tackle adulteration and stop the marketing of fake and substandard products.

In a separate message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she is delighted to know that BSTI is observing the World Standards Day like other ISO (International Organization for Standardisation) member countries.

Sheikh Hasina said role of "Standards" is highly important in building safe and sustainable world for all.

Sheikh Hasina said: "Greatest Bangalee of all time Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted that Bangladesh does not get deprived of any benefit from any invention of the world and wanted that the people of Bangladesh are ensured a better life."

"To achieve this goal, Bangladesh in 1974 under the leadership of Bangabandhu had gained membership of the then standards organization BDSI," she said.
