Water transport workers call off strike

Following a meeting with State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian at the ministry on Wednesday night, water transport workers who had declared a strike on Tuesday night withdrew their strike programme.

Leaders of workers unions revealed their decision soon after the meeting. They disclosed that a decision in principle was made about providing food allowance to water transport workers.

Initiatives will be taken through an inter-ministry meeting to implement the plan within 2020.

Apart from these, the meeting asked the Director General of Shipping Department to handle the demand of forming provident fund and welfare fund for workers, reports UNB.

Labour and Employment Secretary KAM Ali Azam, Jatiya Sramik League President Fazlul Haque Montu, Additional Secretary Dr Md Rezaul Haque, other high officials and workers’ unions leaders were present at the meeting.

Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union, Bangladesh Water Transport Sramik League, Bangladesh Cargo Trawler Bulkhead Workers’ Union declared the strike programme to press for 15-point demands including demand for 100 per cent food allowance, issuing appointment letters, service books, and landing pass for crews of vessels.
