Transport workers blocked the Dhaka- Chattogram highway in front of Load Control Station (weighing scale) in Sitakunda upazila for two hours on Saturday protesting an alleged assault on a truck driver by the station staff.
The workers blocked the highway at Boro Darogar Hat point with trucks around 9 am creating acute traffic congestion in the area.
Witnesses said, the Load Control Station staff asked a Dhaka bound truck driver to land on the scale line but the driver tried to go straight denying the order.
At one stage the argument turned into a clash, witnesses said.
The workers also locked into clash with police when the law enforcers tried to disperse them from the road following chase and counter chase between them.
The law enforcers fired several rounds of tear shells on the protesters to disperse them, said Mozammel Haq, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sitakunda Police Station.
Later, the transport workers withdrew the blockade around 12 pm, he said.
Additional police were deployed in the area to fend-off any further unwanted situation, he added.
