Transport workers beat up protesting students in N’ganj

Four student protestors were beaten up by transport workers on Wednesday in Signboard area of Narayanganj.

The injured students were identified as Sezanur Rahman, Kawsar Ahmed, Sajib and Hridoy.

Sub-Inspector of Siddhirganj Police Station Rezaul Karim said that the students were beaten up by the workers.

The transport workers were reportedly protesting vandalism of public transports and demanding security for themselves over Sunday's road accident in Dhaka, reports UNB.

But he also added that those injured were not detained, rather in their custody.

Fearing possible backlash, police assigned additional force and appeased both the students and transport workers to call off their protests, which was hampering transport movement.

Students of several colleges and educational institutions united to stage a citywide blockade to protest Sunday's accident and demanding the resignation of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, isolating the city from Dhaka.

Areas from Signboard to Madanpur, Rupganj and other highway routes were severely disrupted due to the blockade.

Later additional superintendent of police Monirul Islam said that they were able to convince the workers to withdraw their position and resume traffic movement afterwards.
