A speedboat overturned in the middle of the Padma river on Shimulia-Kathalia route near Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj district on Wednesday, injuring five passengers.
Police said a Kathalbari-bound speedboat with 20 passengers overturned in the middle of the river due to strong current around 9:15 am.
Liakat Ali, officer-in-charge of Louhajang Police Station, said locals on other speedboats rushed there and managed to rescue all the passengers.
Among the passengers, five sustained minor injuries, the OC said.
Meanwhile, plying of all river vessels including speedboat and launch has been suspended after the incident due to strong current in the river, reports UNB.
"The ban will remain effective until the situation goes normal," said Mohammad Khaled, additional general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).
However, three to four ferries were plying slowing in the route.
