Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda has said smart National Identity (NID) cards will ensure free, fair and competitive elections.
The CEC came up with the statement at smart NID ceremony at Narayanganj Press Club on Sunday.
“The distribution of smart NID cards has been slow due to different reasons but we will distribute 94 million of them by the end of 2018," Nurul Huda said.
The Chief Election Commissioner have also assured to hold upcoming Rangpur city polls in a free, fair and competitive manner.
"Rangpur election will be just like the previous ones held in Narayanganj and Comilla," he said.
The commission was fully prepared to hold the Rangpur city elections on December 21, he added.
According to bdnews24.com, former secretary Akram Ali Mridha, former principal of Tolaram College Shirin Begum and Narayanganj Press Club President Mahbubur Rahman Masum received smart NIDs at the ceremony.
Regional Election Officer of Dhaka Rakib Uddin Mandal presided over the function.
