SC halts Khaleda’s bail in two cases

The Supreme Court has issued a stay order on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail granted by the High Court in two cases over violence in Cumilla.

Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique has passed the order in response to the state’s appeal challenging the bail order on Tuesday.

“The judge has sent the case to the full bench for hearing on the appeal,” said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam who moved for the state. He said the hearing will be held on Thursday.

Lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain moved for Khaleda, reports bdnews24.com.

On Monday, Justice AJM Asaduzzaman and Justice JBM Hassan granted interim bail in the two cases that involve the firebombing of a bus in Cumilla’s Chauddagram and the anti-terror case over illegal explosives. But it denied the bail in a defamation case filed in Narail.

Hours after the High Court granted bail to the BNP chief, the government filed two petitions with the Supreme Court seeking stay on the HC bail orders.

The former prime minister has received a four-month interim bail in the Zia Orphanage Trust case in which she is serving a five-year jail term, but has not been released due to arrest orders in a number of other cases.
