The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a High Court order that had put on hold the proceedings of a case filed over the seizure of liquid cocaine at Chittagong Port in 2015.
A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by acting Chief Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Mia, passed the order following a petition filed by the state, reports UNB.
Advocate Zainul Abedin, who stood for prime accused Nur Mohammad, Chairman of Khan Jahan Ali Group Ltd, said the apex court also asked the lower court to complete the trial in the case within six months.
It ordered Nur Mohammad to surrender before the trial court within three weeks and asked the lower court to consider his bail if the case proceedings are not completed by this time, he said.
Earlier on October 8, an HC bench stayed the proceedings in the case following a petition filed by Nur Mohammad.
On June 8, 2015, customs intelligence officials seized a container of liquid cocaine detected in one of the 107 drums of a consignment of Bolivian sunflower oil.
On June 28 of the same year, police filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act against Nur Mohammad and some other people.
On November 19 last, assistant commissioner (North) of Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police M Qaruzzaman, also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge-sheet against eight people.
On May 14 last, Nur Mohammad's name was dropped from the charge-sheet in the smuggling case and on August 9, the state demanded further investigation into the incident.
