Removing Bangladesh from red list to be discussed in BD-UK meeting Thursday

Removing Bangladesh from the red list will be a key issue that will be discussed in the Bangladesh-UK foreign secretary-level meeting scheduled to be held on Thursday, officials have said.

In the meeting, Bangladesh will request the UK to remove it from the latter's red list as the Covid situation in the country has improved.

The UK recently put a travel ban on Bangladesh and some other countries.

The meeting will also discuss other important issues, including Bangladesh-UK ties post-Brexit and the changed geopolitical scenario in South Asia following the Taliban’s takeover of power in Afghanistan, officials said.

Philip Burton, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, will lead the UK delegation in the meeting.

Cooperation between the two countries on the post-covid recovery will also be a focus in the meeting.

Recently, the British Foreign Secretary visited Qatar on the Afghan issue. So we will have an opportunity to know the latest development about it” Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen told the newsmen while commenting on the meeting.

He also said that Bangladesh will stress the need for lifting the travel ban on Bangladeshis imposed by the UK government due to the Covid situation.

We will tell them that Covid situation has improved a lot in our country, he added.

He said that in the post Brexit scenario, both countries have wide scopes to enhance trade and investment cooperation.
