Heavy rains triggered by active monsoon inundated many areas of the capital city of Dhaka on Monday, causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.
According to the Met office, rain may continue across the country for a week.
Many roads, lanes and by-lanes in different parts of the capital went under water following the rains that started coming down around 12:30 pm, reports UNB.
Vehicles were seen stranded in traffic gridlock while people struggling a lot to get vehicles to reach their destinations.
The worst-affected areas included Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Karwan Bazar, Khilgaon, Malibagh, Motijheel, Paltan, Kazipara, Rokeya Sarani, Shewrapara, Kazipara and Mirpur-10.
The Met office recorded 33.3mm of rainfall in three hours from 12 noon to 3pm,said Ruhul Kuddus, a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
"Rain may continue for a week," he added.
According to a Met office bulletin, light to moderate rain/thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country.
The land depression over North Odisha and adjoining area moved westwards and now lies over Northwest Jharkhand and adjoining area. It is likely to move northwestwards and weaken gradually.
Under its influence, steep pressure gradient persists over the North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh.
The axis of monsoon runs through Rajsthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, the centre of the land depression and thence northeastwards to Assam across Gangetic West Bengal & central part of Bangladesh.
The monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate to strong over North Bay.
