German Ambassador in Bangladesh Achim Tröster on Thursday said like some other European Union (EU) countries, Germany is also concerned over the recent political violence in Bangladesh.
Stressing on political stability he opined that ensuring conducive business environment is a must for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) here, and holding free and fair elections is crucial to ensure stable democracy.
"We are convinced that free and fair election is a contributing factor to stability," Mr Tröster noted while addressing the launching of German Business Council in the city.
Performing democracy is linked to free and fair polls, and every citizen has the right to cast his/her vote in a free and fair manner to chose government, he added.
"Other systems can be stable, but democratic system is freer."
The ambassador mentioned that a stable business environment is needed for attracting FDI, as nobody likes to make risky investments.
Along with other countries of the EU, Germany also expressed concern over the political violence that took place in Bangladesh in the last two weeks.
Urging those 'who have influence' to call upon their followers to refrain from violence, Mr Tröster opined that violence would not ensure welfare of the people of Bangladesh.
Nobody should consider political oppositions as enemies, he said, adding, "You know what I mean."
It may be mentioned that Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen urged the foreign diplomats two days ago to refrain from commenting on domestic affairs of Bangladesh.
The minister also urged the media not to place questions to the foreign envoys on domestic affairs.
