Unidentified miscreants attacked Professor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari, vice-chancellor of Islamic University in Jhenidah early Friday.
The car carrying VC was stopped on the highway to Kushtia by felling trees, before a group of men damaged it and physically assaulted him.
Askari started from Dhaka on Thursday evening for Kushtia.
His driver Farhad Hossain said that they were on their way to Kushtia after dropping Askari’s PS Rezaul Islam in Jhenaidah.
Around 3am, when they reached the Charhiar Beel area on the Jhenaidah-Kushtia Highway felled trees on the road caused them to slow down when a group of men attacked the car, he said.
“They broke one of the glasses and told the VC sir to get off, but I drove on for another 300 feet. Sir got off and tried to escape, but the men nabbed him, when sir told them to take whatever was on him.”
Bdnews24 said around 30 minutes later, police arrived at the scene and took them to the campus, said Hossain.
OC Ratan Sheikh of Islamic University Police Station said they have launched an investigation.
“We are probing whether it was a robbery or something else,” he said adding the attackers could not make off with Askari’s belongings.
