Minister asks CJ to launch probe into corruption allegations

The law minister has urged newly-appointed chief justice (CJ) to launch investigation into corruption allegations brought by the attorney general (AG) against apex court officials.

Anisul Huq made the call on Tuesday during a courtesy meeting with CJ Syed Mahmud Hossain at his Supreme Court office.

"Senior lawyers also agreed with AG Mahbubey Alam. I discussed the allegations of corruption and irregularities at the Supreme Court with the CJ. I told him that the allegations needed to be investigated and he assured me of taking steps in this regard," he said.

At a reception accorded to the new CJ at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday, the AG said a large portion of court officials and employees is involved in corruption.

He also said, "What is discussed now about different High Court benches can't be expressed in words. If this situation continues, it'll be difficult for those who are still honest to maintain their honesty."

Mentioning that the Law Ministry works as a bridge among the three state organs -- legislature, executive and judiciary, Anisul said there’ll be no lack of cooperation from his part to maintain this bridge.

UNB reports that the minister also said the apex court will soon get new judges.
