Military exercise Shanti Doot to begin at Rajendrapur Monday

A multinational exercise on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations named 'Exercise: Shanti Doot-4' will begin on Monday.

It will be held at Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operatic Training (BIPSOT) of Rajendrapur Cantonment in Gazipur.

The exercise helps countries militaries prepare for the UN peace operations.

BIPSOT Chief Instructor Brig General Tofael Ahmed said Bangladesh Army and United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) are organising the exercise under the Global Peace Operations Initiative (lGPOl) Programme and it will end on March 12.

Briefing reporters at Inter Service Public Relation (ISPR) office of Dhaka Cantonment on Saturday, Brig Gen Tofael Ahmed said Security Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique will formally open the exercise.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat is also expected to be present at the opening session, he said.

Around 1,319 participants from 32 countries across the globe will participate in the programme, Brig Gen Tofael said.

The participants countries are: Australia, Bangladesh, Benin, Bosnia Herzegovina, Cambodia, Canada, Fiji, Ghana, Great Britain, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Peru, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, the USA and Vietnam.

The main aim of this event is to build capacity of the armed forces of troops in United Nations peace operations.

Besides, the aim the 'Shanti Doot-4' is to ensure tactical proficiency and technical competence of leaders and soldiers for supporting a unit's Mission Essential Tasks List in UN peacekeeping mission.

The goals and objectives of Shanti Doot-4 are to increase participants' interoperability and peacekeeping skills prior to deployment in UN missions.

Shanti Doot-4 is focused on preparing militaries from many countries to participate in United Nations peacekeeping missions around the world, BIPSOT Chief Instructor said.

UNB said, the exercise is featured with three broad aspects - Field Training Event (FTE), Staff Training Event (STE) and 'Critical Enabler Capability Enhancement (2CE).
