Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday had two bills tabled regarding the formation of Gazipur Metropolitan Police and Rangpur Metropolitan Police.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan placed the bills titled ‘Gazipur Metropolitan Police Bill 2018’ and ‘Rangpur Metropolitan Police Bill 2018’ in the parliament with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
The two bills were sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Ministry asking the committee to submit its reports in the House within 15 days, reports BSS.
Earlier in November last, the Cabinet approved the two draft laws to form the separate police force for Gazipur metropolitan area and Rangpur Metropolitan area.
The proposed law will empower the police forces of the two metropolitan areas to fine up to Tk 5,000 for violation of laws.
The two draft laws were framed in light of the existing Sylhet Metropolitan Police Act, 2009 and Barisal Metropolitan Police Act, 2009.
In 2012, Rangpur City Corporation was formed with 203 square kilometre areas and nearly eight lakh dwellers.
On the other hand, Gazipur City Corporation was formed in 2013 with 330 square kilometre areas having a population of 20 lakh.
