Journalists from different media outlets on Monday formed a human chain at Karwan Bazar intersection in the city protesting attacks on some of their colleagues during the ongoing student movement seeking safe roads.
Senior journalists, including Nagorik TV Chief News Editor Dip Azad and ATN News Head of News Munni Shaha, among others, joined the human chain.
Dip Azad demanded that the attackers be brought to justice by publishing their names and photos with detailed information, reports UNB.
He referred to a published list of 30 people with their names and photos who pushed the student movement towards violence through spreading rumours and urged the government to do the same for identifying the attackers of journalists.
Munni Shaha was seen holding a poster with another senior journalist Masuda Bhatti that reads "Truth cannot be hid beating journalists."
They formed the human chain around 4:00pm and demanded exemplary punishment of those who attacked journalists during the student movement.
Speaking at the human chain, the journalists equivocally urged the authorities concerned to take steps for stopping such attacks on the media people for the sake of freedom of press.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in a statement expressed concern over attacks on its members and other journalists during student protests.
In a statement, DRU President Saiful Islam and general secretary Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo condemned the attack and urged the government to ensure the safety of journalists, and demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers after their arrest.
At least seven photojournalists were injured in attacks by unruly youths in Jhigatala and Science Laboratory areas of the city on Sunday while taking snaps of an attack on protesting students.
The injured are AM Ahad of international news agency the Associated Press (AP), Zawad of the Daily Janakantha, Palash of the Banik Barta, Rimon of US-based Zuma Press, Sharif of the Dainik Naya Diganta, freelancer Rahat and Enamul Hasan, a photography student of Pathsala South Asian Media institute.
