The government has hiked the public transport fares in an exclusive manner to favour the transport owners, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity said protesting the fare hike.

The passengers’ welfare association on Monday also demanded the government to fix a fair and acceptable bus and launch fare by rejecting the increased public transport fares.

Secretary-General of the association Md Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury made the demand at a press conference at Shishu Kalyan Parishad Auditorium in the capital's Segunbagicha in protest of the "exclusive increase in public transport fares in collusion with the owner-worker-government".

The government had earlier promised to increase the fares in a tolerable manner after holding discussions with all parties following the fuel price hike but this was not reflected in the case.

He alleged that the government increased the bus and launch fares by excluding passenger representatives, as per the demand of the bus and launch owners.

The analysis of the cost of fixing the fares has shown the old bus as new, false information about the salaries of the driver-helpers, payment of bonuses, bank loan has also been shown on the 20-year-old bus.

Sharifuzzaman Sharif, a member of the organisation's advisory council, Vice President Tauhidul Haque Liton, Joint Secretary General M Manirul Haque, and Publicity Secretary Anwar Hossain, spoke at the event among others.
