The government has approved 16 development projects, including installation of a power transmission grid at a cost of Tk 109.82 billion to distribute electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) gave the approval at the committee’s regular meeting in Dhaka on Tuesday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The total cost of the 16 projects is Tk156.83 billion.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters that the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCB) will install the transmission line in Rooppur power plant by December 2022.
Of the total cost for installing the transmission grid, the government will provide Tk 15.27 billion, the PGCB will provide Tk 12.35 billion and the rest Tk 82.19 billion will come from the Indian third line of credit.
Under the project, some 609 kilometre 400 kV double circuit transmission line, 60 kilometre 230 kV Rooppur-Baghabari double circuit transmission line and some 12 bay extensions will be installed.
The minister said out of the total Tk 156.83 billion cost for 16 development projects, Tk57.08 billion will come from the government exchequer, Tk 12.35 billion from the agencies’ own fund while the rest of Tk 87.40 billion will come from the project assistance.
The planning minister said once the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is built, power generation at that plant would be cost effective in the long run and there would be no concern over the impacts of nuclear energy as Russia would take away nuclear waste from the country.
