Abhijit Chattopadhyay, assistant high commissioner of India in Rajshahi, visited Thakurbari village under Rangpur district on Monday morning where an angry mob recently attacked the Hindu-dominated region and vandalised and torched houses of the Hindus.

He went to the village at about 10.12am and stayed there for several minutes, a news agency reported citing police sources.

However, he did not make any comments.

Meanwhile, police arrested a total of 53 people from Gangachhara and Kotwali areas till Monday morning.

Earlier on Friday, a man was killed and 20 others, including four policemen, were injured in a clash at Thakurbari village in the upazila over a reported Facebook post by one Titu Chandra defaming Prophet Muhammad.

Over the issue, around 8,000 people from nearby villages marched towards Thakurbari village, a Hindu-dominated area and vandalised and torched 8-10 houses of the Hindus.

Police on Saturday morning filed a case with Gangachhara Police Station against more than 2,000 people, including 25-30 named ones.
