The administration has removed a house built on a bridge at Faridpur village in Chakua union under Khaliajuri upazila of Netrokona district following a report published on The Financial Express on May 9, 2022.
A family in the Jalmahal area had been living on the bridge for nearly three years. As a result, pedestrians had to walk under the bridge.
Netrokona Deputy Commissioner Kazi MD Abdur Rahman told the FE that the house has been removed today (Monday).
He said the paper will be sent to the concerned department soon for the construction of approaching roads to the bridge adding that quick action is being taken to solve the problems of the locals.
Locals said the bridge was built six years ago but it remained unused due to the unavailability of connecting roads.
In the fiscal year 2016-17, a 38-foot paved bridge was constructed over the canal adjacent to Jalmahal in the Faridpur area.
About 10-12 thousand people from at least 12 villages including Faridpur, Lepsia, Fatua, Rashidpur, Chakua, and Jagannathpur use this important path every day during the dry season.
The construction cost of the bridge was estimated at Tk 3.89 million. The work was carried out by a contractor called Habib Enterprise. But since there are no connecting roads on both sides of the bridge, vehicles have not been able to cross the bridge since its construction.
Khaliajuri Upazila Project Implementation Officer Rajib Ahmed said, "Water will come to Haor in a few days. Then that road will also sink. There are plans to build connecting roads in the coming dry season.
Currently, there is a bypass road under the bridge. There is no problem in moving small vehicles and pedestrians, he added.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) HM Ariful Islam said the road has been measured on the spot today (Monday) to make the approaching roads suitable for use in the dry season.
The estimated cost of the connecting roads will be sent to the Deputy Commissioner, said the UNO.
