Australia claims to have ‘reliable’ information, suggestive of militants planning to target Western interests in Bangladesh.
“There is a high threat of terrorist attack in Bangladesh,” it said on Friday, asking its travelling citizens to “stay alert and maintain an active awareness of your environment.”
“Ensure you have robust security plans in place. The level of our advice has not changed. Reconsider your need to travel to Bangladesh,” the country added in its updated travel advice.
Australia’s department of foreign affairs and trade has mentioned past terrorist attacks and political violence and recent arrests of militant suspects increased security measures in Bangladesh.
According to the travel advice, local security authorities remain on high alert and continue to arrest individuals alleged to be planning further acts of violence.
The threat of further terrorist attack persists at this time. Remain vigilant and adopt enhanced safety precautions.
Australian officials in Bangladesh have been advised to avoid high-profile shops frequented by foreigners. Officials continue to be advised to travel only by motor vehicle.
Security at the Australian High Commission in Dhaka has been strengthened and remains under constant review.
Cricket Australia had declined a planned visit in October 2015 at the last minute over security worries. They agreed to reschedule the series in August of this year only after assuring them of head-of-state level security.
